Introducing...

Well, actually, I'm not sure who he is yet. He's the new kitten that I got today from the SPCA. He is four months old. So far he and Fenway seem to be doing ok together, although Fenway is eating all the kitten food and guarding the litter boxes.

Lisa's Beret

Pattern: Lisa's Beret by Kirsten Kapur
Yarn: Malabrigo Chunky, Azul Bolita colorway (it's much darker than in the photo)
Needle: size 9, circular and size 11, DPN
Date Started: January 28, 2009
Date Finished: January 31, 2009
Comments: This yarn is a bitch to wind. Very nice to knit with though. I used a little more than one skein. I messed up one round, but did not feel like going back and finishing it. I am not sure how I feel about this hat. It might be a little too slouchy for me.

It's Sunny Today...

...so that means two more finished objects.

Pattern: Lady Grace Beret by Elizabeth Eisenstein
Yarn: Debbie Bliss Rialto
Needle: size 4, DPN and size 9, circular
Date Started: January 24, 2009
Date Finished: January 25, 2009
Comments: Very quick knit once I got the hang of the lace pattern. I think the beret is really cute, but not really warm enough for Ithaca winters. This might be an indoors only hat until the spring.

Pattern: TTL Mystery Sock by Kirsten Kapur
Yarn: Classic Elite Yarns Alpaca Sox
Needle: size 2, circular
Date Started: October 1, 2008
Date Finished: January 28, 2009
Comments: My first cable project! I think this is the longest I've ever spent making a pair of socks, but I'm really happy with the end result. The yarn is so soft and has a perfect halo. If I can make tiny cables on size 2 needles, I don't think I can be intimidated by any other type of cabling.

I'm caught up with my finished objects for now, but hopefully I'll have a Lisa's Beret made out of my new Malabrigo to show you early next week.

Mmmm Malabrigo

A box of this (3 skeins) arrived today. My first Malabrigo. Isn't it yummy? I know the photo is a little fuzzy, but it is the best I can do on such a gray day. The color is fairly accurate.

If it ever stops snowing so I can take some photos, I have two more finished objects to show you- my second pair of Through the Loops Mystery socks and my Lady Grace Beret.

By the way, I highly recommend Eat.Sleep.Knit. They have a great selection, lower prices than other websites, ship very quickly, and give you cute extras in your package.

Kenyan Monkeys

Aren't they cute?

Actually, they are little buggers. Towards the end of my trip to Kenya, I was complaining to my roommate that I had not seen any monkeys. I was considering changing the name of my socks. She suggested I call them "Kenyan Baby Warthogs" because those things are so incredibly ugly that they are adorable. I love how they trot with their tails straight up in the air. On our last day, we went on a mini-safari. As soon as we got to the park, we saw these monkeys by a tree. We went into the building to pay, and while we were in there, the monkeys jumped in our van. They were looking for food. One was playing with my sweatshirt and I was sure that it was going to pee on it. Our driver had to scare them away by threatening to throw a rock at them (do not worry, he did not actually do it). No harm was done to the van or my sweatshirt, but everything smelled like animal for the rest of the day.

In honor of these fresh monkeys, I decided to keep the name of my socks. I started the first one on my plane rides to Kenya and finished the second during my trip.

Pattern: Monkey by Cookie A.
Yarn: The Plucky Knitter Merino Cashmere Nylon Fingering, Colorway Riverview Drive
Needle: size 2, DPN
Date Started: December 30, 2008
Date Finished: January 13, 2009
Comments: Love the pattern, love the yarn. Awesome project for distracting me from my fear of flying without being too difficult for a cramped plane seat. Everyone on the plane asked what I was making, and it was fun to show them the picture of what the final socks would look like.

No More Yarn Shopping!

Seriously, I'm not kidding. I've bought six skeins in the last two days, and I have my last shipment of a sock club coming in the next week or two. So what did I buy?
  • 3 skeins Malabrigo chunky for a Katie Beret by Kirsten Kapur and Bella's Mittens by Marielle Henault (my first Malabrigo!)
  • 2 skeins Louet Sport weight for #03 Marlene by Cookie A
  • 1 skein Trekking 126 (the yummy Neapolitan color) for basic socks
  • 1 skein Plucky Knitter TBA. I'm sure these will be socks too
So I am not allowed to buy any more yarn until I've completed the following projects:
  • Mystery socks (80% done)
  • Forest canopy shawl (30% done)
  • Katie Beret
  • Wool-Ease Mittens
  • #03 Marlene
  • Basic Trekking socks
  • Bella's Mittens
  • Revenge of the Mummies Socks
  • Mr. Scrooge's Interchangeable Mitts
  • Kaylee
  • A pair of socks out of the Plucky Knitter Yarn
Once I've done all of these projects, I'll have used my new yarn and I won't feel too guilty about buying some yarn for Relm or the Dream in Color Shrug.

Look What I've Started Working On Again

Yes, it's my Forest Canopy Shawl. I did another pattern repeat. I'm up to 7. I wish I knew how many I will need to do before I feel like it is long enough. I know I want it a bit longer than the pattern, but I am not quite sure how much longer.

Guess What I Finished?

Yes, I'm finally working on finishing all the projects that I started as part of my end-of-semester starteritis. I have one more pair of socks and the Forrest Canopy Shawl to go.

Pattern: Mary's Garden Socks by Melly A. Matthews
Yarn: ShibuiKnits Sock
Needle: size 2, DPN
Date Started: November 14, 2008
Date Finished: January 16, 2009
Comments: This was a mystery sock KAL. I loved all the different options Melly gave us. I think these came out really cute, albeit a tiny bit too big. I'd go down to a 1.5 or 1 next time. I would also try the patterned foot for more interest. The color change is also more subtle in real life than in the photo.

A Better Picture of the Candy Cane Socks

I think you can see the pattern a little better here. They really are cute.

My Fearless Knitting Goals for 2009

I do not believe in New Year's resolutions. I think the connotation of "resolution" sets you up to fail in whatever you pledge to do. As such, I do not make them. However, I do have yearly goals. Last year Knitting Daily talked a lot about being a "Fearless Knitter." I really like that idea. I have been thinking about how I would like to graduate from an "advanced beginner" to an "intermediate" knitter. With that in mind, my goal is to make the following projects in 2009:
  • Mittens
  • Toe-up socks
  • Sweater
  • Colorwork
